Arbella Insurance Foundation’s “Let’s Drive Out Hunger” initiative enters its second decade.
Nashua, N.H. – January 1, 2019 – Marc Berube, President of Eaton & Berube Insurance Agency, announced today that the agency has donated $1,000 to the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter as part of the Arbella Insurance Foundation’s Let’s Drive Out Hunger program. Along with Eaton & Berube, the Arbella Insurance Foundation donated $1,000, to bring the total donation to $2,000.
Now in its 11th year, Let’s Drive Out Hunger aims to alleviate the prevalent issue of food insecurity in New England. The Arbella Insurance Foundation collects contributions from any of Arbella Insurance’s nearly 500 partner independent agents and matches each donation on a two-to-one basis – up to $1,000 per agency. Over the past decade, the Arbella Insurance Foundation and independent agents have exceeded their 10-year goal by contributing more than $1 million to more than 400 food programs, including food pantries, food banks and homeless shelters throughout New England. The total funds raised equals $1,070,614.
“Hunger is a persistent issue in all of our communities and can affect our friends, our neighbors, and even our colleagues,” Berube said. “We are proud to donate to the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter to help local families overcome food insecurity, and we encourage other businesses to follow suit.”
The severity of hunger continues to affect thousands of families across New England. According to the USDA, 13 percent of households in Connecticut and more than 10 percent in New Hampshire suffer from hunger and food insecurity. Fifty-six thousand families in Rhode Island lack adequate food. In Massachusetts, research shows that almost 10 percent of households struggle to find and provide healthy meals.
Hunger is not a problem facing just those in poverty — it is also a challenge faced by working- and middle-class families according to the Greater Boston Food Bank. Statewide, the child food insecurity rate is 18 percent, compared to just over 11 percent for the full population. Despite low unemployment rates, food insecurity is not going down, due in part to the rising cost of living, including housing and child care.
“Last year, the food insecurity rate in Massachusetts was 27% higher than it was 10 years ago,” said John Donohue, chairman, president and CEO of the Arbella Insurance Group and chairman of Arbella’s Foundation. “Throughout the past decade, we donated more than $1 million to fight hunger in the local communities we serve and are dedicated to continuing that fight. We are grateful to our independent agents for the wonderful work they do to drive out hunger and we are dedicated to supporting them by maximizing their contributions to help local families in need.”
